Tips on Creating Lesson Plans (Teacher)

edUNIFY's mission is to bridge gaps between classrooms at a global scale, and to facilitate conversations among students that will broaden worldviews.

To accomplish this purpose, our web portal pairs classrooms around the world with one another, creating a private teacher-to-teacher discussion board to help educators create lesson plans and conversational prompts with one another, in order to promote healthy, eye-opening dialogue.

Here are five tips on how to build an ideal lesson plan, and a memorable experience for your students:

Tip #1: Organize a Schedule

Create a schedule with the other teacher that will work for both classes (e.g. classes logging in every Monday and Wednesday) up until the pair expiration date. Due to time difference, conversation will rarely be live, but students can log in to discussion boards and view and reply to previous messages to continue the conversation.

Tip #2: Provide Students with Background Knowledge

Prior to initiating conversation among students, teachers are encouraged to provide students with background knowledge about the other class's country. Such steps can be helpful in providing a basis for conversation among students, in addition to preventing ignorant statements from entering discussion.

Tip #3: Utilize Conversation-Starters and Prompts

In order to effectively facilitate conversation during each day of conversation, teachers are encouraged to utilize conversation-starters and prompts, including, but not limited to:
  • What are your hobbies? What sports do you play?
  • What language is spoken in your country?
  • What are some popular traditions and customs in your country or community?
  • What system of government exists in your country?
  • What kind of music do you listen to? What are your favorite movies?

Tip #4: Reflections in Journals

Students are encouraged to keep journals throughout the paired collaboration process, and to write reflection entries summarizing each session, outline knowledge gained from the experience, and record questions to ask in the future. Journaling can be helpful in tracking student development throughout the process, and in retaining learned information.

Tip #5: Keeping in Touch

Students are encouraged to keep in touch with paired peers after the expiration of the classroom collaboration. Remaining in contact can be beneficial in building lifelong friendships between students living thousands of miles from one another, and can also continue the learning process for both students.
